Meg’s Radar #14

Welcome back to another Meg’s Radar! Got some neat games for you this week, 4 board games and 1 video game. I know, I’m breaking into new territory with that, but video games are one of the things I frequently back. So enjoy, and thanks for reading!

Victoriana by BJ Gailey and Brad Lawrence

  • 1-4 Players
  • 45-90 Minutes

victorianaVictoriana is a cooperative game for 1-4 players. Players will take on the role of investigators (real or imaginary) to put a stop to a conspiracy to harm the Queen. There are three elements that must be discovered in order to put a stop to the dastardly plan. Players must discover the mastermind behind it, what he/she plans to do (the plot), and where exactly in London it will happen. Players will travel to different locations, collecting clues, but they must get to the next place before the trail goes cold. Time is not on your side. You must discover these things and get to the location to put a stop to the plan before the clock strikes midnight on Big Ben.

Doughnut Drive-Thru by Grail Games

  • 2-4 Players
  • 25 Minutes
  • Age 10+

download-4Do you have what it takes to make the best doughnut? Can you make the most tips? In Doughnut Drive-Thru players will take on the challenge of learning doughnut recipes, then preparing them, and serving them up to customers for tips. Players who make the most delicious doughnuts will get the better tips, so choose your recipes wisely. Making doughnuts will not be easy though. You must be able to beat a skill roll to prove your doughnut making/serving abilities. But don’t worry, your previous doughnut successes will help you out in this department. The game lasts until one player has completed 5 doughnut orders, and the player with the most tips will be the winner.

Donuts can be collected if they are chosen by only one person. Any donuts that were picked by multiple people will not be collected. Donuts will give you points and also have the potential to give you special abilities to get you ahead in the game. Try to collect sets, pairs, or uniquely powerful donuts. Play will continue until all the donuts are gone, and the player with the most points is the winner.

Unreal Estate by Grand Gamers Guild

  • 2-4 Players
  • 15-20 Minutes
  • Age 8+

00139b2a2c49afac2241ba466c2e98a8_originalIn Unreal Estate players will try to gain points by collecting sets of buildings. These buildings will generate points based on the amount of the same type of building located in the scrap pile (there must be at least one of that building type in the scrap pile to play cards). Players will either draft a card on their turn or play a card, or set of cards, from their hand. Any cards left over from the proposal board will be added to the scrap pile. So, there will be some strategy for when you draft a specific card or play it. However, things will not always be so simple, as there are a few buildings that have special abilities, and will change the way things can go.

ARC Continuum by Akimbo Creations

27211ccb18d1fdff220e1a49e4b7e277_originalIn Arc Continuum, you play as Hadrian, a man who has been entrusted with the ARC, a powerful device that has the ability to manipulate time. It gives him godlike powers, such as allowing him to summon versions of himself from different timelines– to help him free his home world of Taraan from the Kasaar conquerors who have enslaved his people. The play style draws inspiration from games like Deus Ex and Prince of Persia (one of my absolute favorite video games). The art of the game combines sci-fi future tech with the symbolism and architecture of ancient structures, like the Pyramids and Stone Henge. I’ve actually had the opportunity to play a demo of this game, and I can say it is really beautiful. The game play is challenging and fun. There is a lot of potential here and I, personally, am excited to see the final product. The game has also already been Greenlit for Steam. It will initially be available for PC, but they are working towards versions for Mac and Linux.
